Funchal
The name Funchal derives from the plant Foeniculum vulgare, known as fennel. Reports from the time indicate that the original settlers have given this name because when disembarking they came across a vast quantity of trees and fennel plants.
Despite the abundance of fennel, sugar was able to provide shape to the sustainable economy in the city of Funchal and the whole island.
Sugar production, as well as the vineyard, became indispensable for the local economy. This is the reason that their icons were incorporated into the city’s coat of arms.
