Museums

One of the most important elements in the Flemish Art Centre is the collection of Flemish paintings from the 15th and 16th centuries, which arrived in Madeira at the height of sugar production. The Flemish panels stand out for their quality and large dimensions, uncommon in European museums.

Another highlight of this collection is the collection of Flemish sculptures, mainly from Malines and Antwerp.

The Portuguese Art Centre includes collections of paintings, gold smithery – where the Cross that was offered by King Manuel I to the Cathedral of Funchal deserves special mention and adornments.

These collections cover pieces from the 16th to the 19th centuries.

It is one of the most visited museums in our city, and a must-see for any art and history lover.
