The museum’s major collection includes archaeological finds from excavations in the former houses of the Flemish merchant João Esmeraldo, carried out in Praça Colombo in 1989 on the site of buildings demolished in 1876.

Also noteworthy in this collection is the sculpture, gold smithery and furniture collection, heritage that reflects the economic power derived from the sugar cycle.

The primary mission of this museum is to show visitors the main historical testimonies of sugar production and technology when it was at its peak, marking one of the most significant economic cycles in the entire history of the archipelago.

Open to the public since 1996 and under the supervision of Funchal City Hall, this friendly museum awaits your cultural visit.
