The statue alluding to the historical figure of João Gonçalves Zarco was made by the sculptor Francisco Franco in 1927.
This historical figure is of great importance to the island of Madeira, as he discovered the island under the command of D.Henrique and was later consecrated as the first Captain Donatory of the city of Funchal.
