Monumento a Nossa Senhora da Paz (Monument to Our Lady of Peace)

The Monument to Nossa Senhora da Paz is undoubtedly the grandest monument in symbolic and dimensional terms in the whole island and city of Funchal.

This work, designed by the architect Emanuel Ribeiro, was commissioned after a request for peace from the people of Madeira to Our Lady of Monte, after a submarine attack on the port of Funchal.

Occurring in 1917, during the Great World War, the attack sank several ships and their chains were used to build a rosary that is at the feet of Our Lady of Peace, framing the monument.

Ten years after the attack, the promise to Our Lady of Monte is fulfilled and on 14 August, the day of Our Lady of Monte, the monument is inaugurated.
