Praia Formosa
This beach has a strong historical context for Madeira, more precisely for Funchal. In 1508, it was the “gateway” for French corsairs who ravaged the Madeiran capital with violent pillaging.
Located west of Funchal, 10 minutes by car, and 25 minutes walk from the heart of the city, Praia Formosa is the only public beach that, through a promenade, joins two cities in the region, Funchal and Câmara de Lobos.
With an extension of 2 km, it is divided into four sandy and pebble beaches, known as Praia Nova, Formosa, dos Namorados and Areeiro.
The quality of the seawater is certified by the European Community Blue Flag. It is considered by many Madeirans and tourists to be their favourite beach.
This beach has the Accessible Beach Award 2015. Having easy and obstacle-free pedestrian access, from the public road to the orderly parking with reserved places for vehicles for people with disabilities, to the accessible pedestrian access to the sunbathing area. The sanitary installations are adapted and there is an accessible first-aid post and lifeguard.
