Largo da Fonte
Largo da Fonte has a bandstand that was built-in 1890, and the Virgin’s Fountain, constructed in marble and stonework in 1897. The fountain contains a niche with the image of Our Lady of Monte and this is a place of great devotion for Madeirans.
Still, in Largo da Fonte, we can find two bronze sculptures: the bust of Father José Marques Jardim and a piece of art in low relief in honour of the Carreiros, men who transport tourists to Funchal in the popular wicker sledges.
At the top of the gardens stands the Church of “Nossa Senhora do Monte”, inaugurated in 1818, where Emperor Charles I of Austria is buried.
