Altares de São João
The Altares de São João event is a traditional celebration of Madeira Island, bringing an atmosphere of colour and joy to the streets of Funchal.
During this event, the city is decorated with altars built and decorated by local residents and local merchants, in reference to São João and his most representative symbols.
In addition to the altars, the festival also features a lively musical program, offering a variety of styles and rhythms, to delight all participants. It is also possible to taste the Madeiran gastronomy, which enchants the palate of the visitors.
Local shopkeepers enthusiastically join this event, being challenged to create their own altar, which reflects their area of commerce being a true tribute to São João. This celebration becomes a unique opportunity to get to know Madeira’s culture and traditions, celebrating life and devotion in communion with the local people.
