Built-in Gothic style, with Mudéjar style alfarje ceilings, the building was commissioned around 1519 and underwent various alterations throughout the 17th and 18th centuries.

In 1982, work was restored and adapting this building to the current premises of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, with the architect Chorão Ramalho being responsible for the work. They were completed 5 years later, in December 1987. In the courtyard, next to the chapel, a statue by the Madeiran sculptor Amândio Sousa entitled “Trilogy of Powers” was placed.
