With the intention of protecting the city of Funchal from the attacks of pirates around 1614, the construction of the São Tiagos’s fortress started.

Its construction was the responsibility of master builder Jerónimo Jorge and, years later, his son Bartolomeu João completed it. Under the responsibility of the engineer Tossi Columbina (author of the project of Funchal’s port) phase of works was finished in the 17^th century and the second phase around the 18^th century
