Palácio de São Lourenço

The palace stands in a strategic point of defence on the Island (Zarco Avenue). It is considered as the greatest civil and military architecture on the island. Its construction started in the first half of the 15th century and was concluded in the Spanish dynasty that reign in Portugal from 1580 to 1640.

After having the duty of defence, this building became the residence of the Donee Captains of Funchal and Governors Captains-General, until the implantation of the constitutional government in 1834, where it had its definite residential duty.
