Located between Rua das Mercês and Rua 5 de Outubro, it runs parallel to Rua do Marquês, 223 meters long, in a course that was once a little different, when it ran between Rua de São Pedro and Rua dos Ferreiros.

Initially, it was a private street, however, between the 15th and 16th centuries it was widened and made public, by the family of João Rodrigues Neto Calaça, to allow the passage of the procession of Corpo de Deus. João Rodrigues was a person from the mainland who settled in Madeira, where he died in 1531. Its name is a tribute to this family.

This artery has few traditional houses, where most of the buildings are flats, shops, restaurants and hotels and local accommodation (AL).

We find, approximately halfway down this street, the old building of the Ateneu Comercial do Funchal, which was restored and now serves as the headquarters of the Direção Regional de Juventude e Desporto (Regional Directorate of Youth and Sports) and has a nice terrace inside.
