Almirante Reis Garden
This urban garden is located in the historical area of Funchal, in a space occupied by the football field of Club Sport Marítimo in the early twentieth century.
The “Monument to the football player”, by sculptor Martim Velosa, located here, is a tribute to those who played here, in what was one of the first football fields in the city of Funchal.
Designed by landscape architect João Ferreira Nunes, it opened to the public in 2001. In 2003, the cable car station was built, connecting the historic centre of Funchal to the parish of Monte. Since then, and especially after the severe storm that struck the island of Madeira in 2010, the garden has undergone changes, being officially inaugurated on June 1st 2012, where it hosted the 1st Funchal Garden Festival. Here, the spaces that were previously undulating were flattened, occasionally holding cultural events and fairs in them. In these spaces, it is possible to find an exhibition of historical boats, consisting of two glass constructions, exhibiting in one, a boat that made the connection between the city pier and the ships that anchored in the bay, before the construction of the port, and in another, a support vessel to hydroplanes. Works of art can also be found, such as the bronze bust of Max, famous Madeiran fado singer, by sculptor Luíza Clode, a sculpture by José Fernandes entitled “Doce Loucura” (Sweet Insanity) and a monument alluding to the 500th anniversary of the foundation of the Diocese of Funchal, by sculptor Ricardo Velosa.
Since 2014, the SkatePark, the first winning project of the Participatory Budget for the city of Funchal, can be found here.
