Parks and Gardens

Public Garden Várzea

The urban garden was inaugurated on the 22nd of April 2010, World Earth Day, to offer the growing population of the parish green spaces for leisure. Obeying rationality criteria, the garden’s design took advantage of the local potentialities.

It has a central lawn, surrounded by a vegetation curtain, giving intimacy to the space and reducing traffic noise. At the top, a flowerbed was created where wetland plants were installed as well as a simulated lake. At the lower end, part of the space was used to transplant three large palm trees from the municipality’s works in progress. The yellows, pinks and lilacs introduced by the trees, shrubs and herbaceous species dominate this space, which is bordered by a cobbled footpath.

On the 24th of November of 2011, the statue “Só-Bem-Me-Quer” was inaugurated here, marking the International Day for the elimination of violence against women, designed by sculptor Martim Velosa and executed by students from the Vila Mar educational establishment.
