Santa Catarina Park

It is the first park in the city, with an area of 35,200 m2.

The first known design was made by the first Portuguese landscape architect, Francisco Caldeira Cabral, and over the following 40 years, other authors designed what is now known as Santa Catarina Park.

It was the location of Nossa Senhora das Angústias Cemetery from 1837, which was transferred to São Martinho between 1939 and 1944. The Chapel of Santa Catarina is a central part of this composition, being the first religious temple erected in Madeira in 1425, with a fabulous view of Funchal’s harbour.
