Monte Municipal Park
A municipal garden whose construction began in 1894 and the first phase was completed in 1899. Located in the parish of Monte, it is the highest municipal garden with an area of 26,000 m2. At the top of the garden, the church of Nossa Senhora do Monte was inaugurated in 1818.
The main entrance to the park is in Largo da Fonte, where there is an art nouveau wrought iron bandstand and the Virgin’s Fountain with a niche with the image of Our Lady of the Mount. The park is full of endemic and exotic species, some centenary trees, several footpaths in the style of a romantic garden and is crossed by the Santa Maria stream. In the centre of the park, there is a lake with a map of Madeira Island carved in stone.
